For sale is a beautiful example of the Iconic Epiphone E-230TD Casino. Some Beatles fan info. The Beatles have made several guitars famous by playing them at one time or another during their historic reign. Perhaps none more than the Epiphone Casino. It was the guitar that was used more consistently as THE main or “go to” guitar for a longer period, on more recordings, owned and played by all three guitar playing Beatles, Harrison, Lennon, and McCartney and at the same time, than the Epiphone Casino. The Epiphone Casino was the only guitar that John, Paul and George had in common. McCartney still uses his, referring to it as his favorite electric, “if I had to choose one electric guitar, it would be this”, Paul McCartney. Lennon has also been quoted as saying the Casino was his favorite. It follows then that no guitar was more closely associated with the Beatles sound than the Epiphone Casino. It is also worthy to note that the only mod common to both Harrison and McCartney’s guitar was the addition of the Bigsby Tremolo.
The E-230TD Casino was Epiphones answer to Gibson’s ES-330TD. Gibson was shrewd enough to create their own biggest competitor in hollow body electrics when they acquired Epiphone in 1959. At times during the 60’s Epiphone guitars outsold Gibson guitars but no problem for Gibson because the money all flowed to Gibson Corp.
This guitar is certainly one of the best playing hollow body electric I have ever played. The action is adjusted amazingly low on this guitar (1/16” at the 12th fret) without any hints of buzzing or fretting out and has plenty room to adjust up or down. The neck is super straight with no hint of twisting, bowing or humps with a C shape and 1.5625” nut width. Body is Maple. Mahogany neck. Brazillion Rosewood fingerboard. The fingerboard has a 12 degree radius, 22 Frets and 24 ¾” scale. I believe the guitar to be completely original with the exception of the added B-3 Bigsby which is period correct. Frets are Gibson large frets that I believe have been dressed but still plenty of life in them. Everything works as it should and the two P-90 pick ups sound great, exactly as they should. There is what I would term as light finish checking as many if not most of these guitars are fairly heavily checked. The finish is total original with none missing or flaking anywhere. Cherry Red color is still vibrant. The only real ding I find is on one top corner of the peghead as shown in the close up picture. No noticeable scratches, dings, dents or pick wear on the front, back or neck. Original Blue Kalamazoo label is still in tact and clearly legible. The guitar comes with a hard case that is missing one buckle and appears it could be original. It fits perfectly but I can’t say with certainty.
In summary, this is an exceptionally fine, very clean example of a great playing, iconic guitar with no issues. It is ready to go with a fresh set of 10’s on it. Thank you for looking. I have described to the best of my ability and will be glad to answer any questions you may have to the best of my ability.
