It's the fretboard. If you hook an audiometric isotope analyzer to a 10 GoogolHz scope and calibrate the frazzistat to record any discombobulated frequencies even a cursory analysis will show that the open high E string compared to the same string at the 7th and 11th frets has variances in the 10 to 12 picofukits range.
