Ooooh I had one of these way back in the day.... sold it, then got a guv'nor 2 maybe 15 years ago. When I got the newer one, it wasn't even like the old one was coveted or getting all traded up and what not. For me, I got the same sound out of the two but just that the knobs on the newer one had a wider range (which I didn't make any use of). Still use it to this day once in a while. I always liked using it as a base for what I look for in a "Marshall tone" more than the lead channel of Marshalls. Just never really gotten along with those amps. Of course, nowadays since I don't gig anymore, by use, it's usually just putting the pedal in the clean channel of a JCM2000 and then turning it on, playing a chord and a few riffs, turning it off, stepping on the footswitch to engage the lead channel and repeating that endlessly:rofl:

I Had a Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal, from the first series : black folded metal box with 3 knobs ans blue lettering.

I bought 2nd hand brand new with its complete packaging for 40 Euros.

I opened it and traced the schematic, who knows ?

This pedal became a craze some yearsafter, schematics were published on the web, even PCBs or kits became available...

I never bonded with this poor sounding pedal, though... There was always something unpleasant to my ears in the harmonic content of the distortion.

My personal explanation came from the fact that it used a TL072 chip. I tested this chip in similar circuits and retrieved that same ugly harmonic content when the chip enters clipping by itself, after the diodes are.

I made the same observation for the other TL series chips. I do not use them so, prefering 741, 1458, 4558 and 308 chips for nmy IC-based overdrive and distortion circuits.

Consequently, I sold my Bluesbreaker pedal for... 250 Euros to a collector ! And I could sold it ten times... Crazy !

I passed on a bargain 'Guvnor just a couple years ago as part of a package deal with a guitar (what I was actually interested in) because it was a long drive. At the prices the vintage ones are going for now, it would have been a good idea to hop in the car. Oh, well, not my first financial mistake.

For me, I can't see paying Marshall big money for something that the clones do just as well. Yeah, put them back to back and you'll find some minute differences. But realistically, no one knows unless it is a back to back test. An audience will never hear it.

For your information @Equalphone : the cheap Danelectro Daddy'O is the same circuit as the Marshall Guv'Nor, with the exception of the switching in/out circuit. On the Daddy'O, it's electronic (à la BOSS) than on the Guv'Nor, it's a mechanical FSW (from Alpha, IIRC).

So you have an alternative... 😉

I have one of those. In fact I have the whole 1996 "big body" series, including the Dan-o-matic tuner and 18V Cool Cat chorus.

Here's 4/5 actually on a prior incarnation of my board.

Those Dano pedals surprised the hell out of me.
Criminally underrated by gear snobs .
Just like this Arion Hot Watt 2, that knocked my Tube Screamer off my pedalboard.

The Billionaire Series is really good too. I've got the Boost and Tremolo from that series on my board right now.

The key advantage of the Billionaire Series over the prior "big body" and "Cool Cat" designs is the proper switch.

That, and they're not plastic like the "Food Series"

The Dano pedals have a great 1950’s kitchen appliance feel to them. Dano maintains a unique vibe…not sure how much they sell, but they’re different.

I guess if Marshall is reissuing pedals that were once popular, that’s one thing. Pretty pricey though. And the pedal market is so over saturated. Fender just released a bunch of pedals as well, why I don’t know…

The early ones like I was talking about earlier weigh about the same as a 50's kitchen appliance. Big ol' diecast cases.
The switch is the Achilles heel on them though. Mine still work just fine, but I trust the Billionaire switches a lot more.

The new ones, I feel, overshoot their true market. The Eisenhower, Breakdown, 3699 Fuzz, and Talkback don't strike me as $120 to $200 pedals.
Especially not when you've got stuff like the JHS 3 Series pedals out there. If they came in at $75 to $120 - I think they'd sell boatloads.
