Gary Rossington passed March 5, 2023 at age 71. He was the last founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the last legit member save for Artimus Pyle. He was also half of one of the all-time great rock guitar pairs.
To my thinking, Rossington/Collins were a great pair; King & Gaines did, of course, add something wonderful, but Gary & Allen were amazing with them or without them.Great rock guitar trios in reality. Ed King's early contributions on his Strat where also a major part of the sound of that band. Those opening chordal riffs to Sweet Home Alabama were his and they're legendary.
Following Ed's departure Steve Gaines (RIP) also made his presence as another guitar "voice" in the band well known. What I came to to appreciate from listening to them is how each player carefully crafted his part around the others complimenting them while never competing for sonic space. It was both instinctive and carefully worked out.
Each player also had a recognizable style and tone based on their chosen instruments. Gary Rossington always played a Les Paul and a more soulful player, Allen Collins was flash and fire on his Explorer, and Ed King was the riff and lick oriented guy on his Strat a role Steve Gaines eventually took over. They were all amazing players in their own right. At their peak they were what Southern Rock was all about.
I have heard it said that the only lifeforms that will survive the nuclear holocaust are cockroaches, Cher, and Keef.RIP
It makes me very sad to see so many posts like this lately. I guess I need to come to terms with the fact that I am at the age where all of the musicians I have always idolized are getting to the point where it's only a matter of time before they leave us. For me, Paul McCartney will hit me the hardest whenever it's his time to leave. Hopefully not for a while! The second will be Keef but luckily he has the uncanny ability to never die.
